Participating retailers continue accepting AC units through Sept. 15
Customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation turned in 529 window and through-the-wall air conditioners for recycling during the utility’s Air Conditioner Turn-In Event at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Sears over this past Memorial Day weekend – and since then, many additional units have been received.
“The response to this program has been terrific, as our customers are taking advantage of this opportunity to save energy and money by trading in their old air conditioners for new, high efficiency models,” said Charles A. Freni, Senior Vice
President of Customer Services. Central Hudson customers can continue to turn in their older, working units for free recycling at participating retailers (Sears at the Poughkeepsie Galleria, Sears at the Newburgh Mall, Sears at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, and Sohns Appliance in Walden) and receive a $50 or $100 mail-in-rebate when they purchase a new, Energy Star® window or through-the-wall air conditioner, respectively. The program runs through Sept. 15, 2010.
“Replacing an older window or wall air conditioner with a high-efficiency Energy Star model conserves electricity, protects the environment and saves money,” said Freni. The units turned in to date can together potentially save an estimated 23,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year,
about $3,800 in energy costs and 12 tons
of greenhouse gases
if all are replaced with Energy Star models. Nearly 42,000pounds of metal and plastic will be recycled while environmentally harmful oils and refrigerants contained within the recycled units will be safely disposed of. In addition, participating customers are eligible to receive mail-in rebate incentives of $50 to $100 toward their purchase of each replacement unit.
Refrigerator/freezer recycling and incentives
Central Hudson customers may also receive a $50 recycling incentive for older, working refrigerators and freezers through Dec. 31, 2011, and may call (866) 706-3995 or visit RecycleMyAppliance.com now to schedule a free pick-up.” said Freni. “Central Hudson will pick up the units at our customers’ homes for recycling at no charge.” Older appliances, especially secondary freezers and refrigerators, are high-energy users and are often costly to operate, using an estimated average of 1,200 kilowatt-hours per year and costing about $200 annually to operate. “Recycling can save money and energy,” said Freni.
Operating window and wall air conditioners will also be accepted for pick up when a qualifying refrigerator or freezer is collected at their homes during the same appointment. While there is no recycling incentive for air conditioners, customers can still qualify for a rebate of $50 or $100 toward the purchase of a new Energy Star air conditioner.
Customers may still turn in their old, inefficient air conditioners and qualify for rebates. Go to this cool savings page for all the details.
