Energy Saving Tips

Top energy saving tips
Saving energy is good for your wallet and good for the environment. These are some tips that are easy and effective:

  1. Clean air conditioner filters every year.  A well-maintained unit uses less electricity.
  2. Seal drafty windows, doors, and holes around plumbing fixtures to keep the heat out in the summer.
  3. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.  They can use 75% less energy than regular bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.
  4. Shut off any lights that you aren’t using.
  5. Replace light switches with dimmers or motion sensors.  Dimming your lights just 25 percent reduces energy use by about 20 percent.
  6. Choose ENERGY STAR Star-qualified appliances and electronics.  They may cost more, but can save about 30 percent on your energy bills.
  7. Unplug TVs, cable boxes and modems, computers, and monitors when not in use.  Plug home-entertainment and computer equipment into power strips, so it’s one easy switch to turn them on and off.
  8. Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when full.
  9. Unplug your cell phone, MP3 player, and PDA chargers when not in use.  They use electricity even when they aren’t charging.
  10. Use the summer months to have your heating system cleaned and inspected by a qualified contractor. This service should be done every year.
  11. Set thermostats on air conditioners to 78 degrees, and higher during times when the home is not occupied; consider using fans to keep cool.
  12. Use large appliances such as dishwashers and dryers during the evening hours, when overall energy use is less.
  13. Close doors, windows, curtains, shades and blinds during the day to seal out the heat and block sunlight when temperatures are at their highest.
